Important Points

Enabling Read Receipts with the Terminal. The Mail application doesn’t support read receipts by default, but you can enable this feature using your Mac’s Terminal: Open a new “Finder” window. Navigate to “Applications Utilities.” Launch the Terminal app. Copy/paste the following into the Terminal: defaults read com.apple.mail. First you need to make sure the email address(es) you will be sending from have been authorised in our Control Panel

These instructions assume your email account has already been setup and is collecting email correctly

Take a note of any settings you change

Only change the items specified - you should not need to change POP3 / IMAP settings

Step 1

Open Mac Mail on Mojave by clicking the Icon

Step 2

Go to the Mac 'Mail' menu and click 'Preferences'

Click on the Mac Mail account you wish to edit
- If you have multiple accounts, you will need to edit each one separately
- We recommend that you restart Mac Mail between each config change
Go to the 'Server Settings' tab

Step 4

Click on the 'Outgoing Mail Server' drop down menu and select 'Edit SMTP Server List...'

Step 5

Click on the plus (+) button to add another SMTP server

Step 6

For the description enter 'AuthSMTP'

Enter your AuthSMTP username and password
- Please ensure that you use the SMTP password and not the control panel password
- You can test your SMTP username and password using our online password checker tool

For the 'Host Name' enter 'mail.authsmtp.com'

Untick 'Automatically manage connection settings' (IMPORTANT)

Set the port to '2525'

Tick the box for 'Use TLS/SSL'

Click on 'Authentication' and select 'MD5 Challenge-Response'

Click 'OK'

Step 7

You have now setup the AuthSMTP outgoing mail server
Please ensure that 'AuthSMTP' is selected in the drop-down menu next to 'Outgoing Mail Server'
Click 'Save' to keep the changes

Step 8

If you would like to use your AuthSMTP service with multiple accounts we would recommend that you configure each account in turn and restart Mac Mail between each account change, we have found issues with this version when editing multiple account configurations

The setup is now completed and you should be able to send email via your AuthSMTP account

I haven't done this; however, you can add a RULE that checks for 'Disposition-Notification-To' and highlights the message in some way. When you are in the RULES panel, select the 'Edit Header List...' from the pull-down menu. This allows you to add additional header items to the list of potential rule attributes.

that's nice, but since you're new to Apple Mail, maybe you like this trick even better:

Open Mail preferences
Select 'Rules'
Click 'Add Rule'
Click the pulldown that says 'From'
Select 'Edit Header List' (last entry)
Click the '+' symbol to add a header
Type (or paste :) ) Disposition-Notification-To
Tell the rule to ensure this header contains a 0 (zero), which will be true until the year 2111
Select an action to do, e.g. set the color of the message to red, or make an autoreply :)
save and apply
all done

I have to note that it does seem to forget about the extra header when you later try to modify the condition, but it keeps working (at least on Apple Mail 2.0.5)

why a date in the Disposition-Notification-To header?

Sorry, I don't understand your #8. Are you suggesting that the rule should check if the Disposition-Notification-To header field contains a zero and if so performs the specified action (colors the message red/...)? I just dug around in my old e-mails to find one with such a header set (luckily I don't get many of these annoying things!), and there is just a line like this:
Disposition-Notification-To: foo@bar.com

So just a return address and no date, which makes sense to me, to be honest. Based on that, I would rather set the rule criterion to Disposition-Notification-To Contains @ (which should be valid even after 2110...).
